One of the greatest architects has passed away last week in Brazil. He was an inspiration for a generation of architects and many believe that his projects and ideas were timeless.
He became a leader for any architect who was schooled to learn more about Modern Movement and was brave to propose a new concept that:
‘When a form creates beauty it becomes functional and therefore fundamental in architecture’
Rio de Janeiro is a vibrant city. For many people it is like a different planet. It is colourful, sculptural and there is a feeling of freedom in the air. Alvorada Palace’s columns seem so light, that they hardly touch the ground. With the Rio Harbour in the background, all seems to blend perfectly with nature. Without doubt there are many architectural buildings that deserve to be seen. In a way, such a journey to see them could be magical.
Those who had the chance to personally meet Oscar Niemeyer in Rio de Janeiro, would agree that despite his age of 104, he was still a youthful person who believed ‘that architecture is important but life is more important’. Perhaps the proper balance between work and life helped him to stay focused. It also inspires and will inspire many generations to come. What a privilege for yet another great architect – Norman Foster to have had the chance to meet Oscar Niemeyer again last year. Later on he admits that Oscar’s advice about future architecture was very valuable. It is never too late to receive a valuable lesson from an inspirational leader.
