Royal Gold Medal for architecture

Dublin based architects Sheila O’Donnell and John Tuomey won the most prestigious architecture award in recognition of their work.  The award was personally approved by Queen Elizabeth II.  It is officially given by RIBA to those who have had significant influence on architecture.

Riba president Stephen Hodder said that their work was “always inventive, striking yet so well-considered, particular to its place and brief, beautifully crafted and ever developing”.

Previously the couple had been listed five times for the Riba’s Stirling Prize : for the Ranelagh Multi-Denominational School (1999), the Glucksman Gallery at UCC (2005), An Gaeláras in Derry (2011), the Lyric Theatre in Belfast (2013) and now the LSE student centre.

Diamond Glass is happy to announce that the LSE student centre project used more than 12 different types of bespoke laminated glass to create a new inspirational building situated in the heart of Westminister. The excellent cooperation between Diamond Glass and Gem Joinery resulted in an impressive final result. Some of the glass had very specific demands such as a 52dB sound reduction and requirement to handle a 1.5 kilo newton walk- on load.  Solar shading, heat gain and safety standards testing were all critical factors on this job and Diamond Glass performed it well.

The ceremony will be based in London on February 3^rd, 2015 where the Royal Gold Medal will be awarded at a special event in Portland Place.
