Urban forest in the sky- news from Milan

Boeri Studio has designed two residential towers, one 110m, the other 76m high. The interesting part in this structure is its sustainability aspect. On numerous balconies more than 900 trees, between 3 and 6 meters, have been planted along with 11,000 floral plants.

The project was developed with Arup’s support and helped to create different sized apartments that have relatively large green areas. The external benefits of the project relate to the natural production of oxygen and corresponding absorption of CO2. Additionally, the design incorporates photovoltaic energy systems that will increase the towers energy independency.

Sceptics might claim that two towers were built above train tunnels, but Arub provided structural and geotechnical designs that considerably eliminate vibration and noise levels.

The project should be completed by the end of 2014.
