Electric privacy glass, also known as smart glass or SPD glass operates by implementing a thin SPD film between two layers or translucent glass. The film consists of a vast amount of microscopic particles within a liquid that reacts to a flow of electricity. When the electricity is switched off, the rod-like particles orientate themselves randomly, blocking all light. When the power is switched on the particles align perfectly, providing enough space for light to pass through. In other words, when the film is turned off, the glass appears to be opaque and when it’s turned on the glass returns to its natural state, completely translucent. Having the control of determining the measure of light admitted into your home provides you with the power to control the degree of privacy you require.

Electric privacy glass is not only advantageous to individual home owners, but also to an array of other establishments. Office blocks also reap the benefits from the use of smart glass by implementing it within their conference centres. Corporate boardrooms often require a degree of privacy, and with SPD glass this can be achieved by simply flipping a switch. Some upper class restaurants have also incorporated electric smart glass in their lavatory facilities with the glass turning opaque once the stall is occupied.
