The close working relationship between Light and Architectural Glass

Le Corbusier was one of the most influential architects obsessed with the role of light in architecture. He stated that “Architecture is the learned game, correct and magnificent, of forms assembled in the light.” The one element of architecture that is most successful in redistributing, gathering and accentuating the splendour of natural light is of course glass; hence the inception of architectural glass.

Architectural glass differs from regular clear glass not only because it’s used as a decorative building material, but it also acts to fulfil specific structural needs. The most common traditional types of architectural glass include:

  • Crown Glass: This was used mainly for windows and is known to be the first alternative method of window manufacturing by hand blowing.
  • Float Glass: This type of glass is probably the most common of all clear glass, it is a soda-lime based glass manufactured by floating the molten glass on a bed of molten metal with a low melting temperature to achieve its uniform thickness.
  • Rolled Plate (figured) Glass: This is the most common method used for cathedrals as the glass can be moulded in various elaborate patterns and styles.

Building on the good practices that have developed over the years in the production of traditional types of glass, advances in science have made it possible to develop new technologies in glass – not only advancing the manufacturing process but also greatly expanding its functionality.

SmartGlass International has taken the concept of architectural glass to a whole new level. By implementing advanced glass technologies, SmartGlass International offers electrically switchable glass or “Smart Glass” with the ability to interchange between clear and opaque with the flick of a switch. Depending on the product, you can achieve an instant change in translucence or render the glass ‘frosted’ by simply applying or removing an electrical current. Whether you are looking for privacy or solar control, SGI will have the solution you are looking for.

It is therefore evident that SmartGlass International can offer a product far beyond the realm of what most even thought possible. For more information or queries on their architectural glass and other products please don’t hesitate to contact us.
