spaces that adapt to users’ needs at the flick of a switch.
The tallest timber structure in the world, this sustainable globe is a beacon of enlightenment and the hub of CERN’s education and outreach programme.
A glass façade lies at the top of the Globe, flooding the entire space with natural light. However, the space is routinely used for presentations and projections which presented a daylight problem.
We worked with our client to design a bespoke framing system and fit Smartglass across the curved skylight and central vortex of The Globe, while preserving the original glazing and in no way compromising the building’s architectural integrity.
Solar Smartglass can be manually or automatically ‘tuned’ to precisely control the amount of light, glare, and heat passing through a window. At CERN, when a presentation is taking place during daylight hours, the glass is switched to the ‘Off’ state blocking 99.4% of the light.
