Privacy and hygiene are of the utmost importance in every operating theatre, which is why Smartglass International was enlisted to help with this state-of-the-art operating suite. Blackout Smart Glass was chosen to meet the exacting brief, creating a sophisticated surgery theatre that is safe, convenient and comfortable for both patients and surgeons alike.
In this application, Blackout Smart Glass was used to create a curved wall that affords natural daylight when appropriate but also blocks 99.4% of visible light when required. Not only does this offer total privacy for vulnerable patients, but optimum comfort and control for surgeons operating in a challenging environment.
All it requires is a small electrical current to activate the unique smart glass properties. Transitioning from transparent to opaque takes just seconds, with instant activation via either remote control or wall switch. UV protection is also 100% effective in all settings for maximum protection in Portugal’s sunny climate.
Blackout Smart Glass was particularly suitable for this surgery theatre not only due to its impressive light and privacy control, but also for its ease of cleaning and maintenance, which help to reinforce the hospital’s high hygiene standards. Unlike other privacy solutions such as curtains or blinds, this sheer, glass surface is easy to sterilise, minimising the spread of contamination caused by harmful bacteria, viruses, or other microorganisms.
